the new 615,000-sf Cancer Center
integrates wet and dry bench research
with patient beds on each floor
The connecting element is the
“knuckle,” where clinicians and
researchers and their teams come
together to discuss cases, treatment
options and other components of
their holistic approach to cancer care.
As with the other examples presented in this article, the facility design
includes: concepts for creating pathways; defining the edges of different
zones to provide visual references;
providing nodes for specialized or
thematic concentrations; districts
that form common building characteristics; and landmarks with clear
identities with prominent locations to
be attractors within the facility. This
facility looks to transform the future
of facilities designed to improve
human health by the full integration
of clinical care, education and research.
As the concepts of “translational health
sciences” evolve and become more of the
best-practices approach to healthcare,
the concepts presented here will be
refined and improved. But it will take
the continued discussions on building
designs and organizational structures to
continue this integrated, collaborative
approach to improving healthcare
