accessible shared equipment; and automatic
horizontal sliding doors to promote sterile
practices and increase space for equipment.
The SCRB typical lab floor plan uses a zoning approach that allows flexibility for each
floor to alter the location of the open bench
area and the support zones. The change from
2-4 person labs helped address the increase
in density and also allows for the increased
population of the building to be met. A new
gathering area for the department was created
overlooking the courtyard below. The offices
are located at the corner of the building along
one of the two primary north/south corridors.
The kitchenette is located at the north end of
the building at the connection with the adjacent
building to promote inter-building community.
Payette conducted a shadow study to find out
if the renovated space indeed provides the flexibility and functionality that it was designed for.
Three lab groups that share the third floor were
monitored for a period of several days. Each
group conducts a different type of research
that utilizes the space in unique ways. The user
feedback as well as an activity map validated
the basic design principles. The study showed
that interconnected open laboratory and support spaces promote varied research activities
occurring simultaneously while still promoting

a sense of a research community; daylit tissue
culture rooms support the intense periods of
habitation of these rooms; and the increase in
density of people creates an environment of
increased research activity density.
The renovation for Sherman Fairchild need-
ed to simultaneously develop a prototypical
laboratory environment for the Stem Cell and
Regenerative Biology Department, but also set
the standard for environmental responsibility
in laboratories at Harvard.
