a direct connection to spaces that are designed to cause reflection.
Attracting and supporting an international faculty in a wide range of
scientific endeavors requires attributes that combined the practical, the
social, and the inspirational.
The IRGs currently working at the CREATE campus are the true judges
of how well the concept and design have performed.
Rohan Abeyaratne, Director of the SMART Centre says, “Our space was
custom designed for the research to be carried out. This has led to some
truly spectacular spaces. SMART has four different types of spaces, wet
labs, dry labs/workshops, low vibration labs and offices, each of which is
very special.” He goes on to note that, “The office spaces have a remark-
able openness to them where researchers cannot help but bump into each
other—figuratively—leading to greater collaboration.”
Not only are the lab and offices key to the operation of the facility,
the overall atmosphere of the garden-like areas and the Town Plaza are
integral in building the sense of a larger community. Abeyaratne feels
CREATE succeeds on this level as well. “The Town Plaza is always vibrant
with students, researchers, visitors continually bustling through on their
way to class, a lab or lunch. One frequently finds staff having lunch at the
edge of the Town Plaza. It is not surprising that we love to come to work
in this extraordinary complex.”
CREATE also looks to commercialize ideas incubated there. Professor
Seliktar, head of the Technion-NRF Muscle Repair Project says, “The
Singaporeans understand that biotechnology, nanotechnology, alternative med-
icine, and alternative energy all appear on the high tech horizon. They have a
vision. Excellent interaction with them has developed, as with researchers from
other universities. This is the beauty of the CREATE project.”
